New collection 2011-2012: Gathering thoughts...

During the last few months (and the next few months) is all about creating the new collection. This is what I've been up to during the last few months (reason for the lack of updates).

Gathering resources:

This is where ideas starts to accumulate for the new collection. However, though you can get inspiration from all kinds of subjects, it becomes challenging to merge and filter information for it to make sense with the theme.

Inspiration filtered down (condensed version):

Works of Ursus Werhli (the composition of chips), Richard Long (stones) and Julian Opie (coloured blocks) -

Werhli's works is the starting point of the inspiration - conceptually. It demonstrates the notion of disassembling and re-assembling an original composition of artworks and ordinary objects. Each outcome is different from the original composition.

Getting some form of construction by investigating vintage orthopaedic footwear (source: London College of Fashion Archive Collection (which stores amazing archives of vintage footwear, pattern pieces, garments, photographs and other trimmings)-

Digging deeper, I had a conversation with a podiatrist in Singapore (there are misconceptions where one would think orthopaedic and podiatry are the same thing, take note, they are not the same thing (I'll get deeper into the difference next time).

PS I know this idea has been done numerous time...so here I would say...isn't it like adding your own ribbons or buttons on your own clothes/accessories? :)

V&A Sketch and 'My New Bomb'

Yesterday, I went to the Victoria and Albert museum to see the exhibition containing Yohji Yamamoto's work.

Obviously, one would know at exhibitions like this, photography is forbidden. The next thing to do is sketch which is usually alright...not for this exhibition!

Here below are the fast sketches I did before I was 'caught'...and yes...very crude lines!

After looking at the series of videos of the fashion show and the display of garments, I bought the book, 'My New Bomb' by Yohji Yamamoto.

I would recommend this exhibition to anyone who is a Yohji or fashion fan. In addition, if one is conceptual with designs, there are three books to browse describing his inner thoughts which were interesting. Don't expect sketchbooks.

Even though the project's completed, I'm still not satisfied with the results.

Sign, move onto the next project and no more dwelling about it.

Meantime, two angles of the pump with cleaning up to do.

"Making the simple exciting?" Ballet Pumps for Drapers

This is one of the times where I would confess...I am stuck...

Literately, I am stuck with my design. I have come up with a form. The criteria of this project is to come up with some ballet pump designs; something exciting, yet easy to manufacture and marketable...

So far, this is what I have as the final form (with a quick (and rather crude) sketch).

Of course, this isn't the work I am most proud of (actually hated it at some stage)... Hopefully, with little more stitch details and other enhancements, I will be at least satisfied...

'Captured Visions' (2010)

This was a project brief where we had to do a study of a brand and reinterpret our own take on designs. Based on the concept of the mirage in the desert... In a strange sense, now to mention it, doesn't really make sense at I am typing this...

I will post more angles as soon as I figure out the layout functions of this blog (super fustrating!).

Day at the Museum: Northampton Museum & Art Gallery (Shoe Collection)

Recently (less than a week ago), I took a day trip (with a friend of mine) to Northampton. Since we had time, we decided to visit the museum with a huge shoe collection!

Here are a few highlights...

I tried on these pair of shoes and I must say, they were too big and heavy! Can you see the little fish inside the heel?

Another part of the room which displayed how 'criminal' shoes can be (or how much criminal evidence the authorities can obtain from just shoes).

I must say, the visit to the museum was educational and worth a visit (plus it is free to enter)! Though the museum is small, the massive amount of shoes (only around 1,000 displayed at the rest of the 12,000 shoes are impossible to display) is enough to keep anyone occupied.

The series of films (so far, only one has been released) by Davis Johnson and Paul Rojanathara covers how influences from music, fashion, products...etc...becomes part of our everyday lives.

This is stuck in my mind from the film (which is an excerpt from Malcolm Gladwell's bestselling book, 'The Tipping Point'): 'The tipping point is a biography of an idea, and the idea is very simple. Ideas and products and messages and behaviours spread just like viruses do...'

Keeping up with Singapore! Whew!

The last one week in Singapore has been really fast that I'm losing track of time....or even...my way...

Basically, I never thought I would say 'Gee, where the heck am I....?'... Yes, at times, I get lost in Singapore.... So many changes in Singapore in one year that it is so hard to keep up. I guess that's the beauty of Singapore! :)

Anyway, as I was typing an email to a friend of mine, I managed to compile a couple of places to visit in Singapore... Here are some of the places (no images but click on the links for a rough idea or search for the names on the Internet) I would usually recommend visitors to head to (that hopefully will still remain there until my next visit!):

- Nee Ann City for the bookstore called 'Kinokuniya' on the 3rd floor and the Japanese departmental store, Takashimaya.

- Cineleisure for the store on the 3rd floor called 'Editor's Market'. The concept of buying the items is the more items you buy, the cheaper the items will be. (http://www.facebook.com/theeditorsmarket )

- Mandarin Gallery for a range of designer wear (there are mainly international designers in this mall though there are some Singaporean and other brands as well such as 'Hansel', 'Ashley Isham', 'JBNY', 'EggThree'...

Another area I love to go to visit to photograph the building is the theatre called the 'Esplanade' (http://www.esplanade.com/). During some evenings, there are free musical performances outside the theatre along the bay. Nearest train station is 'City Hall MRT' or 'Esplanade MRT'

There is a new building (which I haven't been to) called Marina Bay Sands (MBS (Bayfront MRT). The main attraction for $20 (Singapore Dollars) is the 'sky garden' (roof top garden). Just a warning from some of my friends who has been there, DO NOT go there in the early afternoon (like between 1pm-5pm) as the it is really hot up there (the sun!).http://www.marinabaysands.com/SandsSkypark/Sands_Sky_Park.aspx

'Chinatown' (Chinatown MRT)
It's nothing like Paolo Sarpi in Milan. It's completely different. definitely the place to check out.

The street that's the easiest to walk is 'Pagoda Street' which links to the end of the main road called 'South Bridge Road'

Check out some of the shops along 'Ann Siang Hill'. There is one store to visit called 'Front Row' and 'EggThree' along Eskine Road

Near that area is an eating area called 'Maxwell Food Centre' where they serve up a lot of Singaporean cuisine.

A little too late but still newsworthy: Steel Heel - Chau Har Lee

I know this is late in terms of footwear news but been lacking proper internet connection the last few weeks hence the lack of updates. Also had million of things to tackle which include my school project (which hopefully I'll post someday...).

Anyway, a few months ago, at Selfridges and in the Evening Standard I saw this shoe (to be custom-made according to the customer's foot size) by Chau Har Lee (RCA graduate with an impressive CV and achievements!), and in a structural and construction sense, it was interesting.

I've overheard from students in my school that the designer herself must have taken around eight to ten years to develop the heels. I guess it could be one of the elements we do take for granted when designing a shoe...and should take in consideration...

I've seen the shoe and I must say, it looks great on the stand. I've touched the shoe as well but unfortunately, since it is only custom made, I couldn't try them on. Does it look stable enough to support the whole body? I keep visualising myself falling down on such thin heels (where the thickness of the heel is only around 5mm!). Does it look good in real life?

Lanvin for H&M - Fall Winter 2010/2011 Full Fashion Advert (Exclusive)

I've thought of queuing up to buy some items from the collection...probably one of the best looking garments since Victor and Rolf (and yes, Karl Lagerfeld!). However, I have something to do that morning...and I will have to give it a miss since everyone knows how quickly these pieces will snap up!

The Folding Effect?: Issey Miyake

Question, is the origami craze back or has it always been around? Even so, no matter what, I like it! It's one of the ways I get my ideas.

This is the case for Issey Miyake's new collection. Known for his label "Pleats Please" where most of his garments are pleated, he comes back into the season with an 'origami' inspired outfit from his new line, "132 5".

According to Ecouterre,:

"The clothing is first designed using a program that generates 3D shapes from a single sheet of paper."

"132 5", derives from Miyake’s Reality Lab. A software program is used to design the clothing where 3D is produced from a single flat sheet of paper.

What is behind the number, "132 5"?

“1″ is for the single piece of cloth used to make each item,
“3″ represents the 3D shape the garment takes,
“2″ shows that the garment will be flattened in a 2D form
The single space (it is literately added, not a typing mistake) represents "the time between the completion of the folded form and the moment someone puts it on" (Ecouterre)
Lastly, “5″ is a symbol of the concept’s multiple mathematical combinations.

Interesting how the creases gives out a crisp yet clean outline of the dress. This will sure make packing a lot easier!

'Shoe Model' at Selfridges and London Fashion Weekend...

Decoration at Selfridges:

Recently, Selfridges revamped their shoe department where it hosts various brands, high street and designer. In spirit of the revamp, as we go up the escalators, one will be able to see shoes hanging from the ceiling, made from what I believe a series of sheets of plastic (or could have been paper).

London Fashion Weekend:

Those who read this blog outside of the UK, London Fashion Weekend is an event which is held after London Fashion Week. This event enable the public to enjoy the 'fashion week hype'...and also for other designers, well known or new labels to sell off their range of products, off season to the current season for a 'great bargain' (basically another excuse to come up with a shopping spree (which I think it's quite clever timing).

Of course, this comes with a price...and I was willing to fork out the money just to see what's the hype is all about.

Elizabeth Arden makeover counter (a lot of people signed up for this, looked really good but I was too tired and also didn't feel like parting with my £10. However, I ended up buying the foundation powder and skin care product which came with a free gift).

Inside the '£8 goody bag' (though I ended with with more boxes of 'Special K' cereal (as in the event, they kept offering people boxes of cereal though it was already in the goody bag (more cereal for a while!)

Note: Unfortunately, there are no runway pictures as I conveniently forgot to bring my camera. Also, the models on the catwalk glowed in my photos (from my iPhone). However, I must say the show was pretty good considering it's more of a public catwalk show as opposed the official shows where most buyers and celebrities are invited. Anyway, the catwalk show showed a couple of outfits with this season's trend (A/W 2010) and outfits from two brands/designers, Ashley Isham and BodyAmr (interesting drapes on the outfits).

Finally, the purchases I made, just a few jewellery pieces which I couldn't resist.

Will I go again? I suppose I would since the ticket I bought includes the catwalk show and goody bag (I must say, it's a really good one...though if you bought another type of ticket, one would have paid £8 for the goody bag)... Perhaps I will go again just to get that feeling that I actually went to fashion week (when I don't get invited to any shows that is!).

Too bad I don't get to go to London Fashion week...but been having a blast with a workspace.

Should I give myself a birthday treat by getting a pair of this stilettos?

Most of us may have heard of this news in February this year that Paris couturier Jean Paul Gaultier collaborates with Melissa to create this shoe... Another eco-concious product on the loose (and I'm liking it!).

I just saw this in a boutique while walking to my next destination a few hours ago and the question remains...should I get a pair of this shoe?

I was tempted to try them but was afraid that I would end up buying it straight-away (like I did without trying a pair of the Vivienne Westwood court shoes (the first range by again, Melissa).

The heels looked and felt sturdy but didn't know that as I didn't try them.

Oh yes, I saw this in caramel colour as well but I according to "Digital Dazed" (of "Dazed and Confused"), it comes in several colours such as beige, tangerine, lime and of course as pictured, black.

Alright, is it worth that getting the plastic (eco-friendly) pair of stilettos for the price to pay? :)

'Horsing around' and 'being luxuriously sustainable' at Carnaby Street (2010)

Around two weeks (or perhaps more!) ago, I went to see some examples of student's work at Carnaby Street (for LCF 2010 Cordwainers Footwear Design) and well, I wasn't suppose to but I did manage to take a photo of one work which struck me.

This prototype was designed by graduate, Harriet Holt (http://showtime.arts.ac.uk/HarrietHolt)

Up close, it was made out of horse skin and had the horse shoe. There are no heels for support. One has to support at the ball area of the foot (like standing on tip-toes though not that drastic!).

Up-close and 'personal'

The design was based on the concept of therianthropy - the metamorphosis of a human into an animal or a being which is part human, part animal - as found in both classical mythology and popular culture. Honestly, the show piece scared me a little bit at first. However, after a second look, I began to appreciate the construction and the effort taken to make the shoe. It's one of the design I can't take my eyes off!

Another work which I saw nearby this stand was the work by Helen Furber. It has been the talk of the town (well digital-wise through blogs) the last few weeks.The designer takes an innovative spin of being sustainable with her design. The life cycle of the shoe is redefined. The shoe goes through layers that are then recyclable or biodegradable after they have been worn and torn. The leather used (by Soil Association certified Organic leather by Natureally) is organic in a sense that during the whole process, every animal has been treated to the highest standards. The collection was sponsored by Y-3 Adidas.

From the source describing the collection:

"Icica Concept Wedge rexamines luxury footwear materials and construction. The result is an avant-garde product which aims to challenge the traditional footwear product life-cycle."

I loved the idea behind the design and basically, it is something all designers seem to be steering towards, sustainability. Unfortunately, it hasn't been manufactured for the market yet. If so, I would love to get a pair of these shoes as I love the structure and construction.

Latest Creation 'Costing the Earth' Glove Shoe

It's been a while since I posted my creations. Anyway, this is the only one I have done the past few months.

I made this shoe out of one and a half gloves and the heel is made of the floor decking I obtained from Ikea.

The heel I made with guidance from my relative. This was at a slight raw stage before adding the polish.

I saw this on the 'Evening Standard'...

Don't worry, the 'hair' is just printed!!! I guess 'Miss Geschick & Lady Lapsus' decided that it was attractive to look fuzzy at that area (it's only printed on one side). Perhaps it was a little too (ahem!) 'provocative' for the Evening Standard to show the knicker (underwear) version of this print...

...to think people spend money to groom themselves...perhaps a subtle way to go 'Beth Ditto' (it has been reported that she doesn't groom...)?

Yes, I watched Sex and the City 2...

So then, I've finally watched the movie. This is what I think...

Sex and the City 2 was not as bad as the movie critics claimed it was. Fans of the series will still like elements of the movie. However, there were parts of the movie and the styling of the outfits which gave me a bit of goose bumps.

These parts I sort of cringe...

Liza Minnelli's dance number, 'Single Ladies (Put A Ring On It)' sort of gave me the goose bumps but I realised, she actually made an effort. She tried her best pulling off the dance number.

The Irish soundtrack used to show the Irish nanny that Charlotte hired was pretty cheesy that it actually made me cringe (nothing wrong with the music, I just hated the way it was used in the movie)

Sarah Jessica Parker's character, Carrie was a little annoying that I almost got fed up with her. It was like she wants to create another problem for herself...perhaps she got bored...that's why she went overseas? By the end of the movie, she 'grew up' after a little blunder and set back in Abu Dhabi...

The styling...what can I say...I didn't like it at all... It’s ‘tackyville’!!!

Seriously, who would wear something like in the middle of a desert!? No wonder why Samantha was having hot flashes (in another manner)!

Oh my...Samantha...are those spikes necessary?

Seriously, what's with the spikes?! It's either I don't like the dress or I don't really like Miley Cyrus in general... Who do you think wore this dress better? Let me know!

I guess the movie did portray on how some ugly truths on how some people would act if they were in a completely environment...by being amused (and perhaps making fun of) by a culture and behaviour that is 'unusual' to them... It did bring some negative aspects of the characters in the movie....

The writers for the movie might have been somewhat insensitive but....I mean seriously, do we need to see Carrie, Miranda and Samantha poking fun at the women eating chips under her niqāb? This part was unnecessary...which I guess prompted the critics to call this issue ‘racist after the movie was released last week (a little more insights of this issue at the end of the entry). Perhaps this was one of the reasons why UAE didn’t want the production team to film the movie (the movie was filmed in Morocco)? Perhaps way they portrayed Samantha’s behaviour in the movie (which was unacceptable, even though she was really frustrated...Miranda was at least a bit more prepared and considerate to the situation)... However, there is a true element for one scene where some of the ladies, would wear designer outfits underneath their niqāb (this is apparently true as I was once told that this is actually done!).

I did enjoy seeing the movie with my friends...especially one who got excited and sort of gasped at one scene (kissing involved with Carrie and a certain someone)...the situation was hilarious!

I liked how the movie started with a little flash back of how the ladies dressed up almost 20 years ago (with some flashback of styles of the late 80’s). The story was interesting at the start until the ladies decided to go to Abu Dhabi... I guess I wish they focused more in New York like they did in the first movie (which I thought was a lot better)...

Hee hee...I don't get the elbow band on Carrie's outfit...I guess it's what they call 'fashion'!

Wow! That cassette Walkman brings me back memories! I think I've still got mine somewhere in my house in Singapore!

Oh my...this hairstyle brings me back memories...ten year back...when I had my hair cut like this and I got teased at a gathering...

The settings, the interior of the movie, Carrie and Big’s apartment was nicely done...perhaps if I ever get my own place...I would consider using my hallway as a library.

I’ll love to stay and be served in a room like where the ladies stayed in ‘Abu Dhabi’...though I guess might be a little intimidating when you have butlers on call almost everywhere you go...

Lastly...I would love to fly in the airplane class they sat in on the way to Abu Dhabi...I know there are some airplanes with a bar inside...imagine such luxury on the plane on a 13 hour flight....

This is the only outfit (dress by Christian Dior (John Galliano) I liked in the movie...though actually, it was worn in Season Three's episode, 'What Goes Around Comes Around'.

Overall, I still think the movie isn’t that bad...I could re-watch some of the parts of the movie...and skip a couple of scenes to the end... Who know what they will show next (though I thought it should have stopped at the first movie...)....perhaps a prequel?

...and yes, I still don’t like that outfit I last mentioned (Dior t-shirt with Zac Posen skirt), even after seeing it at the big screen!

I've been reading the reviews about Sex and the City 2 and it does not look like the reviewers has taken it well, what about the general public? What were the content of the movie that it had to be banned in the UAE? Wait and see...

However, I'm wondering why are magazines raving about this look?

...I think it doesn't look stylist or appealing at all! I guess I'm not into the outfit because it screams TACKY and partly, I'm not really into t-shirts which spells out any brand names...logos placed in a subtle manner like Lacoste is the best... What went through the minds when they decided to put together this ensemble??? Sure, the skirt is from Zac Posen but seriously, this should be left out at any territory, during all times of the day! Apparently, it was suppose to be to a partial homage to the outfit (tank-top and tutu) at the opening sequence of the television series...

This "me likey"!

Don't get me wrong, I love the series and the styling back then (some bits in the first movie) but I have a feeling, I will be disappointed with the movie as I hated the promotional trailer...

...as for these dresses from 'Halston Heritage' (which Sarah Jessica Parker (Carrie Bradshaw) is chief creative officer for this as well)...

Anyone heading to Asia this Summer? Check out 'Monday Flying'

Monday Flying cover articles of lifestyle, travel and the Asian cities in the website (from the local perspective).

The website covers cities such as Beijing, Singapore, Hong Kong, Kuala Lumpur, Shanghai and Bangkok. I believe it is a good starting point when planing your trip this Summer.

Though the website is still new, I hope it could someday become like the website 'Spotted by Locals' which covers European cities (which I have used quite a lot of since I moved to London).

Lastly, another website I rely on when I am stuck on places to go around in London created by a Singaporean Expatriate in London called 'A Singaporean in London' and 'London Chow' (for food reviews, from there, I found out the address for some delicious handmade noodles near London Chinatown!). This website provides interesting and informative articles on saving money in London, dining, attraction and of course, the 'London culture' (perhaps I should say behaviours!) from a Singaporean point of view.

Indulge? I could use a weekend at a 'coloured coded hotel'....

Project deadlines are looming and I could use the weekend away! Introducing 'The PANTONE HOTEL^TM' in Brussels by the company that specialise with colours coding 'creating a lifestyle' (mainly used to decide on colours for designing products, interiors and buildings).

Each of the guest rooms limits up to seven colours. I guess in a way, it harmonizes the colour environment?

It is strange how desperate people are willing to get into the American Apparel sale at Brick Lane...only to just encounter a riot right outside the venue on Friday (2nd of April) morning.

Oh yes, on that day, only 30 people managed to go in...

For once, I am glad that I slept in that morning (I had the intention of getting up early for the event) and decided to spend the day at home and to go the next day. I only found out about this news when I was checking the Facebook event when I came across the news of the fight. Anyway, I went for the sale and yes, I scored a couple of things. Honestly, if not for the sale, I would not own anything from American Apparel (look at the price list below for the sale)!

Amazingly, to make it up for their customers, American Apparel extended the sale until Monday evening and also gave out discount codes to use on their UK website (up to 40% the listed items from their category 'London Rummage Favourites'.

At the moment, the movie, "Coco Chanel et Igor Stravinsky"

Last year, I mentioned about "Coco avant Chanel " (two links from the two underlined words).

Here is another movie called "Coco Chanel et Igor Stravinsky" which was presented as a closing film for the Cannes Film Festival 2009.

This movie was set in 1913 onwards, before the first issue of the perfume, Chanel no 5. The movie features parts of Igor Stravinsky's ballet, The Rite of Spring.

Even though it's a little late and was released last year, I thought of posting a movie trailer which I think looks a bit more impressive than "Coco avant Chanel" (which to be honest, I wasn't fond of the movie...I liked a few scenes)...but then again, like all movie trailers, it entices you watch the movie and make it seem good. Whoever has watched this movie, let me know what you think.

Recently, while running an errand, I walked along Rathbone Place and got attracted by the window of Lazarides Rathbone gallery (picture from my iPhone (a real sneaky picture!).

There are a series of artworks created by Brooklyn-based artists, Faile (pronounced like the word "fail").

Except from the press release from Lazarides:

"Faile’s work is inspired by Cy Twombly, Robert Rauschenberg, Roy Lichtenstein,

Basquiat and the throwaway imagery of advertising, flyposting, comic books and

TV."

This exhibition from the gallery runs until 19th March 2010. Verdict? Go and see it!

At the moment, the world's first 3D printed polyamid shoes...?

Two students, Naim Josefi and Souzan Youssouf, of Beckmans & Konstfack collaborated with each other at Stockholm Fashion week. Together for the collection "Melonia", they created wearable shoes, which was 3D printed in polyamid.

Excerpt of the concept by Core77:

"The shoes call for further exploration in ever-developing rapid prototyping processes. The pair envisage a world in which we could produce and recycle such objects in a closed loop."

Comment: I wonder how steady is this shoe? I must say, it looks very innovative!

Last week, I went to Paris to visit my friends. As it was the weekend and I arrived Paris around the evening, my time to do a lot of activities was limited. However, Jenny managed to take me out to another shopping area, Marais (pronounced as ma-ray according to Jenny) in the 3rd arrondissement) which was pleasant to walk rather than the busy streets of the 1st arrondissement!
Anyway, while walking along Rue de Sévigné, I couldn't help it but to take photos of this shop, mainly the name...I find it humourous though some may not find the same kind of humour as I do...

Alexander McQueen shall be remembered

While pattern cutting, one of my friends recieved a text message of McQueen. Instantly, I went to the internet and found out, the news was true.

Lee Alexander McQueen known for his lavish and exceptional runway show (and designs) passed on a few hours ago in his home in London. There are speculations that the incident was triggered by the death of his mother (a few days back).

This is the only thing I bought from McQueen, the flapper bag from his seasonal range. I know this sounds really cheesy but this will be one of the great bags I will treasure...

News of him have been popping up almost every moment since this incident...

He shall be missed.

Near the end of 2009, fashion designer Tom Ford made his first debut as a film director, producer and screenplay writer for the movie, 'A Single Man'.

Also, a little trivia from IMDB: "Tom Ford explained in a Fresh Air interview that he created a back story for George's suit based on the George character. He decided that George would have had his suit custom made on Saville Row on a trip home to England, which informed its cut and color. He also decided that, since 'old-school' British people of wealth tend to be thrifty with clothing, that his suit was a few years old. Ford even went as far as putting a label on the inside of the suit with his name and the date that it was made for him (1957)."

Thoughts: This is not the usual genre (drama) I would normally watch. The music got my attention as I was chewing gummy colas in the cinema. I loved the mood and the music incorporated in this trailer...believe it or not, I like Colin Firth! I really hope the movie is as good as this trailer. Many movies these days have really good trailers but the outcome would not be as good as originally intended.

The video below is a short trailer and a trivia about the suit below the video. The film has been released in America. It will be released in the UK on the 12th of February.

'A Single Man' is based on a novel by Christopher Isherwood. The novel is set in Los Angeles a month after the Cuban Missile Crisis in 1962. This story centres on an English professor, George (played by Colin Firth) who, after the sudden death of his partner (Matthew Goode) tries to go about his typical day. He tries to figure out his life after his partner's death and as his close friend Charley (Julianne Moore) consoles him and his young student (Nicholas Hoult) interacts with him.

My Dad sent me an article about a piano he saw on a magazine (I'm not sure which magazine it was featured one).

The Audi Design grand piano (featured middle of last year), designed by Vienna-based piano manufacturer Bösendorfer is priced at 100,000 Euros.

Thoughts: Who would have thought a car manufacturer would come up with a piano? It goes to show, anything is almost possible these days. I doubt I can fork out such amount for this beauty and my piano skills will have to dramatically improve before even touching one key!

Grabbing Attention of Colours: DKNY

This advertisement caught my eye as I was flipping through (digitally) US Elle magazine.

Why did this catch my eyes? It's not the fact that you can wear it in different ways (as much as I like that idea...it has been done a lot of times!). It's simple. I love the colours of the cardigan and the way it was arranged...it has sort of enticed me to get a cardigan from DKNY right now! There goes my money... I'm sure it's just a simple cardigan...perhaps I can just use my existing black or purple one from my tiny little wardrobe...

Colours, colours, colours...somehow on some grey days, I seem to be attracted to colours...

Wow, it has been more than a month since I last went on this blog. Most of you know that I'm doing a course in footwear design at London College of Fashion (which merged with Cordwainer's). Assignments are coming up in a huge stack but thought of posting some of the places I have visited, items I have collected and prototypes I've made the last few weeks.

Here are some of the exhibits made from the graduates from Royal College of the Arts. These works are still under display at Victoria and Albert Museum under the name of the exhibition, 'Future Fashion Now'. Shoes, garments and sketchbooks...

Before we go further, I'll just mention a little about food...

With another group of people, I went to eat french crepes at a cafe called 'The Kensington Crêperiè' (http://www.kensingtoncreperie.com) located at South Kensington and it was the best I've tasted...no other crepes I've tried...well here anyway compare to this! Of course I had share these crepes with a friend...and I didn't get to try the first crepe on the left. If I had one crepe for myself, I would not be able to try both the savory and sweet crepes! You could smell the crepes from far!

For a few days of last month, there was 'guerrilla' ice cream store constructed at London's Selfridges. Here are the interior... Good ice cream it was..in a decent size...three flavours as pictured...I can't remember the name of the flavours though... However, the store has been pulled down as well, it is 'guerrilla'!

Alright, now to the 'fashion' side of things... This is one side of the pair of boots I obtained while I was at Notting Hill earlier last month. They cost £30. The store owner got these pair of boots from a theatre that was closing down. The pair of boots belonged to 'Rebecca Parker'. She got the shoes repaired, replacing the soles. I admit, it was difficult to walk in these shoes but I guess I need to stretch it a bit. It's the only pair of shoes I have that fit my calves. I'm wondering...should I keep the laces red or change them to purple?

This is one side of mules I constructed (with loads of help from the tutor...in case you are wondering...yes I made a pair!)...when I attended a weekend course at another school called Prescott and Mackay (http://www.prescottandmackay.co.uk/). I thought it was a great weekend course to take if you don't have the time to do a full-time course. Most of the classmates I met had a real high interest in shoe making and the class was fun. I though this class was beneficial for my research. I'm learning a different technique at LCF and it's good to learn different ways. Also, at LCF, I'm learning other aspects of shoe making like pattern cutting which was not covered in the two day course at Prescott and MacKay.

Here is a mini-mock up I did with the tissue-thin paper (the type you use to wrap presents) with my foot last. This is one of the mock-up I'm doing for my current project. I hope it works out. I normally use paper to drape and experiment with designs. I wonder if this sort of effect works with leather? Only one way to find out...experiment!

Everyone's talking about 'The September Issue'

After watching the movie, 'The September Issue', I realised that I might have a copy of the magazine back in my house in Singapore. The copy of the magazine was printed back in 2007. I remember on my way back to Milan (I was studying there for around a year) from Singapore, I took out the magazine from my backpack while waiting for the plane to take off. While reading, I remember the lady next to me gasping 'Oh my! What a huge magazine! I've never seen anything like that!'. I never thought how much work and how huge that September of Vogue was until I watched the movie.

I really liked the movie as it was not overly exaggerated like 'Devil Wears Prada'. Sure, it looks tough but it seems pretty real and made me see another side of Anna Wintour. Grace Coddington who we now can see is one of the great brains behind the whole magazine. I had thought that there would be a huge concentration of bitching in the movie...seeing 'Devil Wears Prada' but in fact, I was glad that I was wrong about this!

The actual September Issue that went to press in 2007 and it was super heavy to carry around!

Watch the movie (I've read from FashionNation that the movie is showing at two cinemas in Singapore) or buy the DVD (I bought mine from HMV in London but all of you can get the DVD from Amazon.com). It's not only for fashionistas, it's for everyone to understand what goes on behind the scene and the human emotions that goes into the magazine.

A Mini Update: London's Calling!

Alright, so then, I did not mention this before on this blog but now, I am in London. I will be in London for a while doing a course in footwear. Honestly, it sounds exciting but honestly, I am super nervous to start.
I arrived in London on Friday, after waiting so long at the 'First time students and dependent' queue. The queue was unbelievably jammed packed and some people kept being sent to health control...however, I didn't need to be sent there...as I had my documentations ready but I had to wait at least an hour and a half until it was my turn.

Well then, I'm here, not much has happened apart from seeing a relative and for my parent's excitiement, going to a newer mall (Westfield Mall) to shop. Yup, I had to carry my dad's item which was from Alessi and heavy...and 'broken' according to him...

...at least I managed to get a pair of shoes I've been wanting to get for months from United Nude! It would have cost me SGD$ 400 but I got it for I think GBP 79! My dad thought I bought some hinge to fix the window.

Finally, I've got a pair of these!

It may seem old to most people but honestly, I like the design and it is one of the most comfortable pair of heels at it supports the foot in the middle rather than on the heel. The last it made of the same kind of metal used on BMW cars. Sturdy!
Later on in the night, at the food court, I had a pie from 'Square Pie' with their monthly special, Beef rendang and yes, it tasted like the Indonesian dish itself though it was weird eating it with mashed peas (on the side).Beef Rendang pie!

Now that I am here, I hope to go and see more exhibitions, markets, shops and other cities and countries for inspiration!

Photo shoot for an upcoming online project...

At the last moment last week, I got to participate in a photo shoot. In the photo shoot, organised by Sunny, Yun Ting, Mae and Brendan (the photographer), I had the chance to get one set of my garment from one of the recent project ('Resuscitation') to be part of the shoot. Here are some 'behind the scenes' pictures and video (I apologise for the quality of the video as it was taken from my phone and my video editing skills is nowhere near beginner's level!). This photo shoot is part of an upcoming project mainly set up by Sunny, Yun Ting and other collaborators involved, as well as to promote the gallery Osage Gallery (at Old School, Singapore). Also in this post are some close up of the Dr. Martens shoes that were customised by us for the last project (which hardly got any publicity (for the shoes).

The New Portable Stove...

We all have heard of paraffin stoves or other portable stoves we bring for camping. How about something smaller and lighter?

Stuart Breidenstein of 'Go Robot' creates such an item. Also, on another level, it can be worn as a necklace.

This handmade actual working stove necklace made from brass and copper. There is a brass fuel tank and copper burner are connected with copper fuel line. When using the stove, it is enough to warm up a cup of cocoa. The amount of fuel in the necklace lasts three minutes. Also, the fuel is refillable. However, as mentioned on the website, it should NOT be used while wearing the necklace!

I am such a sucker for pet animals like dogs. I just thought this Moncler ad. campaign for Fall-Winter 2009-2010 (by Bruce Webber) was adorable!

However, I still think garment on a dog is not natural...and a little wrong unless the cold weather is super unbearable! I keep wondering...why do pet owners living in Singapore bother dressing their dog up? Don't they suffer enough from the heat?

Remember in April, I mentioned that in France, they released a movie about Coco Chanel (click here for entry)?

P.S. I was told (from a friend living in Paris who has seen the movie) that the only scene memorable from the movie was when she starts constructing her first collection.

One 'Bold' Inspiration

Let me say something. It's never easy to buy clothes when I am back home. In fact, I shall admit, I am more than over weight. Seriously, it has taken me months to reveal this on this blog.

Nevertheless, it doesn't stop me from dressing up. This does not mean I am not determined to lose weight. I am on a program to lose weight for health reasons as well. However, meantime, I love to get creative with my clothes and stay confident like the indie rock vocalist from 'The Gossip', Beth Ditto.

Beth Ditto (born Mary Beth Patterson) from Searcy, Arkansas, USA has become one of the people I get inspired the most. She's got a cracking voice, really good! She is daring and with loads of confidence without caring how others sees her even though there are criticism on her size and how it will affect the public (I remember once, when I snoozing in bed with the issue of 'Love' magazine, I heard someone I knew was gasping, more like in shock when looking at the magazine cover. Sort of frightened the person...).

Sure, designers (Gareth Pugh, Hussein Chalayan and Alexander McQueen (just to name a few designers...) does make things to fit her size (for photo shoots) but it shouldn't stop us from looking great. On July the 9th, Evans (the UK high street brand) will launch a collection done by the lady herself (more on this extended page: http://www.bethdittoatevans.co.uk/). Also, she was once approached by 'Topshop' to do a collection for them. However, she rejected them as she did not believe in designing for a brand with does not cater for anyone at her size.

Even though we 'bold' ladies will not be able to get these kind of clothes here in Singapore, we can just look at it for inspiration, customize our garments...or ask friends from the UK to help purchase and send over!

Well, here we go, another collaboration! The title says it all! Hitting the store on 14th November, this Autumn, one might be able to afford something from Jimmy Choo. It has been said that it will feature shoes for both men and women, plus a collection of garments and bags. However, these range will be a little bit more exclusive as it will only be sold at 200 selected H&M outlets around the world. Judging from this photo, it looks rather promising...

Now ladies, we can afford to say "Hello Lovah!" like Miss Carrie Bradshaw at the window to a pair of Jimmy Choo!

Fashion Show at the 'Races'

Fashion show, located at the horse racing course at Longchamp du Chantilly (Paris) was done by Studio Berçot (school) on the 14th of June 2009. These clips (split into different parts from my understanding...) here show works from various students from the school.

Comments? Honestly, I'm not digging it but then again, who am I to judge? A few garments were quite interesting. I guess I had to be there to experience it...since from the clip, it looked like a
beautiful day! Also, I would have worn this feather hair clip I bought from "Liberty's" (during my trip to London)....

Antwerp...at last!

Before my trip to London, a friend of mine took me around Antwerp. It was a lot better than I expected!

First, I managed to actually shop for some clothes (don't get me wrong, I like Paris but just the sights, sounds and small little things) as I could fit into the stuff they sold.

I saw a could of brands I liked such as 'All Saints' (UK), Yohji Yamamoto (Japan), Fillipa K (Sweden...I think!)... Other than shopping, I went to the 'Fashion Museum' to see an exhibition called 'Paper Fashion' where designers created accessories and garments out of paper. It was great... Unfortunately, I was not allowed to take pictures...however, I found a link which gives some details of the exhibition and will post three pictures from the site here as a form of a preview...

This is the front of Yohji Yamamoto...a quick photo shot before the shop assistant noticed me... There is a back door that links to the Fashion Museum though the public aren't allowed to go through that door.

This will be one of the places I would go again in the future! Now I know why my friend went there several times!

London So Far...Part One

A week later into my trip, I took the train to London for my course, 'Cool Hunters' at Central St. Martins for a few days...

The first night I came to London, this was one of my meals. I love how these chips were stacked up... This is organic mince beef burger with a side salad served from the hotel I was staying at called 'Ambassadors at Bloomsbury'.

Day One

Paris So Far... Part One

I've place Paris as my main point to my destination for my whole Europe Trip and here's what I've seen so far...

My friend whom I'm bunking in with in Paris has a habit of doodling on scraps of paper and it often comes with great effect!

These patterns got 'projected' onto the ceiling while my friend was doing her embroidery work.

I had a few hours to myself and went around the highest peak of Montmarte.

Clutch around 600 euros plus from a vintage shop...made with two baby leopard's head...I feel really sorry for them... :(

On the tiny ferry that took us across the river so that we could catch our movie...we watched 'Cheri' starring Michelle Pfeiffer and Rupert Friend (only liked the setting and costumes...)

Well, as I've been to Paris, I did not visit the Eiffle Tower again! Ah yes, I did go to the vintage store, 'Free P'Star'. However, it was super cramped and probably did not go at the right time as it was super crowded! I guess I needed time and to be early to rummage through piles of clothing! I did go to two vintage stores and scored two things...which will be mentioned next time!

Trip to Europe, the few days before flying...

In two days time, I will be on the plane to my first destination, Paris!

I would not say it's my first trip.

This is one of the places I would like to go while I'm in Paris:

A vintage store called 'Free P'star' where you have to rummage through mountains of clothes (as described from others). I guess it will be the equivalent to 'Beyond Retro' in London.

I was browsing the Yahoo France website and I saw the movie trailer for "COCO AVANT CHANEL" ("COCO BEFORE CHANEL" in English).

This movie from Warner Bros. France takes place during her childhood and her early adulthood.

...so far, there are no subtitles for this trailer...so to those who don't understand French, just appreciate the visual aspects...

One comment: The story looks promising though I hope they will also show more fashion in the film.

Stationary Art with Hermès

Along the window display at Hermès (in Singapore), the boutique's in house designer, Julian Lee uses series of stationary utensils (tape, pencils, paper clips, memo-pad...you get the drift...) on a huge and normal scale next to their new collection...

On Sunday, Han Suying from 'The New Paper (one of the newspapers published in Singapore)' reported about the window display.
